Your once-smooth legs have developed ropey, bulging varicose veins, and you’re not at all pleased with this new development.
Rest assured, you’re joining a very large group of people affected by varicose veins: about one-third of the general population, which includes 22 million American women and 11 million men.
In most cases, varicose veins are there to stay — unless you come to us for help. At Vivida Dermatology, our team offers vein treatments that target spider and varicose veins.
Here, we look at how varicose veins form and how our vein treatments allow you to bare your legs with confidence again.
Under normal circumstances, the veins in your legs have a harder task because they fight both distance and gravity to move blood back up to your heart. To help keep blood flowing in the right direction — up — your veins feature one-way valves. These valves close as blood passes through to prevent it from spilling backward.
When these valves weaken and malfunction, blood stalls. This can engorge the vein and push it to the surface of your skin, creating a varicose vein.
This condition is called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), and it affects between 10% and 35% of adults in the United States.
The reason why women develop varicose veins more often is due to hormonal fluctuations, which affect blood vessels, as well as pregnancy.
As we mentioned, most varicose veins are permanent once they form, which makes vein treatments the only option for removing them from your legs.
The good news is that these vein treatments are both quick and easy. At Vivida, we offer the gold standard treatment for varicose veins — sclerotherapy. With this approach, we inject a sclerosing agent into the vein, causing it to shut down and collapse.
If you’re worried about whether sclerotherapy affects circulation, we assure you it doesn’t. The bulk of the circulatory work is done through deeper veins in your legs. The ones that we treat are superficial veins that only account for 10% of the circulation in your legs. Also, once we treat the vein, blood easily reroutes to another vessel.
Our vein treatments take less than an hour to administer, and you’re free to get on with your day afterward. In fact, we want you to move around to keep your blood flowing. We also recommend wearing compression stockings after your treatments to boost your results.
After a few weeks, and once your body absorbs the remnants of your vein, you’ll be rewarded with smooth legs you’ll be proud to show off.
