Am I a Good Candidate for Hair Transplantation?
You didn’t realize how much impact hair loss could have on your appearance, but you do now, and you’re exploring hair transplantation. Here are a few guidelines to see if you’re a good candidate.

Like a lot of things in life, you may have taken your hair for granted; that is, until it started slipping away, and you realized how dramatically it changed your appearance.

If you want to hit the rewind button on your hair loss, you’re joining a large group: 85% of men and 33% of women eventually experience some degree of hair loss.

The most effective way to restore your hair is hair transplantation, which is one of our specialties here at Vivida Dermatology.  Our hair restoration expert, Dr. Reba Suri, will determine if you’re a good candidate.

Our hair restoration process

Before we dive into who makes a good candidate for hair transplantation, we want to quickly describe how it works. Our team uses a technique called follicular unit extraction (FUE), in which we methodically transplant individual hair follicles from areas where you have a good supply to areas where your hair is thinning.

FUE is a great way to reestablish natural hair growth. The treatment works well in most cases, but not all.

Is FUE hair transplantation right for you?

When clients come to us for hair transplantation, we first perform an evaluation to make sure the treatment will work. FUE is a commitment in terms of time and finances, so it’s in everyone’s interest to make sure that it goes successfully.

Some of the keys to success when it comes to FUE include:

  • Having enough healthy donor hair follicles to transplant
  • Having stable hair loss due to male- or female-pattern hair loss

If you can check these two boxes, then we dig a little further to make sure FUE is right for you. For example, hair transplantation might not make sense if you have:

  • Scar tissue on your scalp
  • Unstable hair loss
  • Trichotillomania, a hair-pulling disorder
  • An uncommon form of hair loss, such as diffuse unpatterned alopecia (all-over thinning) or cicatricial alopecia (an inflammatory condition that destroys hair follicles)
  • A medical condition that precludes elective procedures

Outside of these parameters, we also make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to expectations and results. Hair transplantation using FUE is a gold-standard treatment for hair loss, and it does a great job of replacing lost hair, but it has its limits. For example, FUE won’t stop future hair loss.

The best way to figure out which option is best for addressing your hair loss and whether hair transplantation makes sense for your goals and circumstances is to sit down with one of our specialists.
